Mumbai: Ahead of the monsoon, activists have highlighted that the construction of an elevated Metro 4 will lead to water-logging in Thane.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) has also written to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) saying that due to construction work which involves digging of sites, water-logging may happen which could also lead to disruption of electricity supply.

“The MMRDA has clearly stated that it will not be held responsible if there is a problem over the power supply. Due to pillars erection and soil testing, they are digging deep at the sites and the power lines are installed there,” said Rohit Joshi, a Thane-based activist. “Moreover, the traffic police has objected to the soil testing to be conducted at Kapurbawdi which may cause severe traffic problems and has asked MMRDA to defer it by 7 months,” he added.

Citizens are also apprehensive about heavy water cuts due to the shifting of water lines for the purpose of Metro 4.

In a press conference in Thane on Monday, it was also revealed that the MMRDA has not received an NOC from the fire department. “Under the RTI, it was found that no fire NOC was given to the project. While many hospitals are under fire for not having a fire NOC, the Metro 4 has no clearance from the department yet,” said Hema Ramani, a Thane citizen and environment lawyer.
