Police nab African man with 70gm mephedrone

The accused Bathlome Raphel Chinoso (28) was spotted by an ANC patrol team at around 2.30am on Tuesday.

Earlier, Chanderia was booked by the ANC in 2012, however, it was a consumption case.

Mumbai: The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Mumbai police arrested a person of African origin from south Mumbai after he arrived near Wadi Bunder bridge and seized 70 gram mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 1.4 lakh from his possession.

The accused Bathlome Raphel Chinoso (28) was spotted by an ANC patrol team at around 2.30am on Tuesday. Chinoso, a resident of Koparkhairane in Navi Mumbai, was along with 10 other African men, when the team was conducting reconnaissance of the notorious spot. The four-member team of ANC’s Azad Maidan unit informed their backup squad, who rushed to the spot, however, by the time the addition reinforcement could reach, the suspects began to flee from the spot.

“The teams succeeded in nabbing Chinoso, whereas others jumped on the railway tracks from under the bridge and fled in the dark,” said Shivdeep Lande, deputy commissioner of police, ANC.

The police frisked Chinoso and found the drugs stuffed in small packets. Officials said that Chinoso was there to peddle MD and had reached the spot sometime before the ANC team raided it.

The officials will conduct a search at his Navi Mumbai residence for his passport to ascertain if he was here on a student visa or a tourist visa.

There is also no clarity on how long was Chinoso has been in Mumbai, however, police there are no past cases against him, officials said. A case under provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) act has been registered against Chinoso and others. He has been remanded to police custody till June 20.
