The assessment will have nothing to do with class promotion. Schools will have their own assessments and class examinations.

Mumbai: The schools run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are being evaluated under the Centre’s Shaala Siddhi programme. Shaala Siddhi is a comprehensive instrument for school evaluation thus leading to school improvement.

The programme involves the formulation of an individual action plan for every school with the stakeholders reviewing the progress of the schools. The students are being assessed to see their progress through mediums like interaction, tracking the marks they score, etc. The improvement or otherwise will be linked to the teachers.

Other than the students, the school are also being considered during the evaluation process such as the infrastructure, attendance, safety of children, progress of students, etc are being evaluated. This is a self-evaluation, where the evaluation is done by the schools and submitted to the BMC education department. On the basis of the outcome, schools will be accredited with grades.

The same project is ongoing in the government-run schools in Maharashtra since February this year. based on that, the BMC was asked to do the same in their schools by the state.

“We got instructions about the scheme, so we met all the school principals and explained it to them about how this self-evaluation works. This scheme will be beneficial not only for us but also for the teachers and other stakeholders of the school, to connect with the students and school report card on a regular basis,” said a senior official at the BMC education department.

The official further said, “As far as grades are concerned, it will be a reflection of how the school and its students are performing. Moreover, with the grades being displayed on the school board, the parents who are up for new admissions can thoroughly prefer if they want to take admission or no. If the school gets a ‘C’ grade, parents will know that the school is not doing well.”

Shaala Siddhi is developed by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), which aims to enable schools to evaluate their performance in a focused and strategic manner and facilitated them to make professional judgements for improvements. NUEPA falls under the aegis of the Union ministry of human resource development.
