Marginal decline in drunk driving cases this Holi

Mumbai: The city police on Monday on the occasion of Holi booked 317 persons for alleged drunken driving. The police recorded 4,531 instances of drunken driving and other vehicular irregularities including triple-seat and helmet-less riding.

According to the police, when compared to corresponding 2016 Holi figures, there was a marginal decline this year. In 2016, the police on Holi day booked 474 persons for alleged drunken driving while 4,641 instances of violation of traffic rules were recorded. Sources said that the police had barricaded areas prone to notorious incidents and deployed people all over the city. Nearly 317 drivers of four-wheelers and riders of two-wheelers were booked for drunken driving.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Ashok Dudhe, DCP (Operations) and Mumbai police spokesperson said, “Performance of Mumbai police in securing the city during Holi was very good as there were no major cases reported the whole day. All in all, I can say it was a good day with Mumbai police putting on a great show with respect to carrying out their duties.”

“Senior police inspectors of respective police stations constantly took rounds to ensure maintenance of peace and harmony in sensitive areas. Female police officers were also deployed at various locations to ensure women’s safety in all areas,” he added.

Sources said the police had also posted officials at beaches including Juhu, Girgaum, Dadar and Versova to control the public that came there after playing Holi.
