RPF jawan spoke to woman for 75 minutes prior to suicide

Mumbai: Investigations carried out by the Mumbai Central government railway police (GRP) into the March 4 suicide of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel Dalvir Singh revealed that he had spoken to a Haryana-based married woman for 75 minutes from his mobile, the day he shot himself with his service weapon. The police is still trying to ascertain why Singh took such an extreme step. Singh’s wedding was scheduled in May.

In the night of March 4, Singh was part of the escort team that was to take the Gujarat Mail from Mumbai Central. Minutes before the outstation train was to leave, Singh spoke to a Neelam Kundu and then shot himself in the chest using his assault rifle twice.  A Mumbai Central GRP team returned from Haryana on Sunday night after recording statements of eight persons, including Ms Kundu. Officials scanned through the call detail records of Singh and found that the duo had exchanged 383 calls in the span of a month, which is also being looked into.

Senior inspector D.B. Pawar of Mumbai Central GRP said they had recorded statements of Singh’s parents, four sisters, Kundu and her husband from a village in Haryana’s Dadri taluka. “Kundu has stated that the calls were casual and Singh would only share details of his duty and what was he doing. When asked if they had a spat over anything, she denied it,” said a GRP officer.

While the duo had been in touch, Singh’s marriage was fixed with another girl, who he had got engaged to in January 2017. They were to get married in May. The police is trying to probe if Singh was in a relationship with anybody apart from the girl he was engaged with.
