Oil tanker turns turtle on WEH, causes traffic jam

Traffic on the Borivali-bound corridor was affected due to the accident, delaying commuters by around 45 minutes.

Mumbai: A tanker turned turtle on Western Express Highway (WEH) near Samta Nagar in Kandivali on Friday noon due to rash driving. The tanker driven by Rajan Bharti, 25, was travelling from Mumbai to Silvassa and toppled on the way, damaging side walls and railings of the bridge near Growels 101 Mall in Kandivali east. Traffic on the Borivali-bound corridor was affected due to the accident, delaying commuters by around 45 minutes.

According to sources, the accused was over-speeding on the WEH along the Borivali corridor at 12.30 pm on Friday. He was on his way to Silvassa with a tanker full of oil when he lost control and the tanker toppled on the road, damaging the side walls and railings of the bridge near Growels 101 Mall, Kandivali east. A police source said that while Bharti was rescued with minor injuries to his right arm, the oil from the tanker spilled onto the WEH.

Inspector Sachin Bayes, investigating officer, told The Asian Age, “The incident occurred in the afternoon on Friday and we have arrested the accused for rash and negligent driving and booked him under relevant sections of the IPC.”

Bharti has been remanded to police custody till Tuesday and has been booked under section 279 for negligent and rash driving of the IPC.
