2 of 5-man gang held in Dahisar over IPL betting

Mumbai: Thane (Rural)’s Kashimira police has arrested two men of a five-man gang for alleged involvement in betting in the ongoing tenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The police said it acted on a tip-off and arrested the duo by laying a trap. The police also seized four mobile phones, diaries and one laptop worth Rs 76,000. The other three accomplices are on the run and police is on their lookout.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammad Afzal Khan (37) and Vijay Dilip Pureel (21).

According to police sources in Kashimira police station, the police received a tip-off from their informer on Thursday night about the betting that takes place in the Ambawadi flat of one of the accused in Dahisar east.

To confirm the tip, the police kept a close eye on the movements of the accused for two days and observed that they entered the flat premises an hour before the IPL match started and left only after the cricket match ended. On Saturday night, the police raided the apartment and caught Khan and Pureel allegedly red-handed.

Senior police inspector of Kashimira police station, Vilas Sanap told The Asian Age, “We have arrested two men from Ambawadi area of Dahisar for allegedly carrying out betting in the ongoing IPL matches. They have revealed that there are three more people involved in this betting and we are on their lookout”.

While investigating the case, Khan and Pureel told the police that there were five members who were a part of this racket. They said that the other three absconding accused co-ordinated with them through phone.

The police has launched a search operation to nab the other three accused of the five-member gang.
