It is not just the temperature, but the heat accompanied by humidity that makes it dangerous.

Mumbai: After Friday’s pre-monsoon showers, the city experienced an increase in humidity, registering a high of 80 per cent. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, has said it expects more showers in the next couple of days in the state.

The IMD also predicted that squall (strong wind) is expected over the city next week. Following the pre-monsoon showers, Mumbai recorded an average temperature of 31 degrees Celsius with humidity as high as 80 per cent, the IMD said.

A.K. Srivastava, senior scientist, IMD Pune, said, “We had made a forecast that it would rain across the state as conditions conducive to formation of clouds were created across the state. There are chances of rain across the state in the coming two to three days. But the temperature will rise again later.”

Mr Srivastava said, “However, there is no relation between this rain and the monsoon. This rain will not advance or postpone the monsoon. The monsoon will hit Maharashtra, including Mumbai, in the month of June.”

The IMD had predicted that Maharashtra would receive rain in May. Some parts of the state witnessed thundershowers, while rain and drizzles were also reported in districts including Sangli, Osmanabad and Kolhapur. The interior parts of Maharashtra, especially south Maharashtra, have already been receiving good pre-monsoon showers. “In the month of May, such pre-monsoon thundershowers are quite usual. There are chances of showers in the forecast through the weekend,” said an IMD officer.

Last year, monsoons had missed the normal onset date of June 10 with Mumbai and it reached the city 10 days later. This year, however, normal rainfall is expected by June 10.
