Mumbai: Four youths were killed on Monday after they alighted from a Borivali-bound local train near Kandivali station in order to take a shortcut to their home. They were knocked down by a Churchgate-bound local train after they failed to gauge its speed while illegally crossing the railway tracks.

The youths were returning from Kankavali in Sindhudurg district to their residence in Poisar in Kandivali. They had alighted at Dadar on Central Railway and taken a train on western line to reach home.

The bodies of these four men were spotted on the railway tracks between Borivali and Kandivali stations.

These youth had boarded a Churchgate local train and were heading to Kandivali. The train stopped for a while at the signal between Borivali and Kandivali station. “Since they decided to take a short cut to reach the station, the four men who were cousins, decided to cross the tracks to reach Kandivali station,” said Shailendra Dhiwar, senior inspector of Borivali GRP.

“The bodies were spotted by an on-duty police constable early in the morning between pole number 32/10 and 32/11 on the up track,” said another GRP official.

Later, the official informed the stationmaster and licence porter who took the bodies to the Borivali Emergency Medical Room (EMR). The doctor concerned at the EMR declared them dead and the bodies were later taken to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali for a post-mortem.  The deceased have been identified as Sagar Chavan (23), who is a resident of Poisar; and Saiprasad Chavan (17), Manoh Chavan (17) and Dattaprasad Chavan (20), all residents of Sindhudurg.
