136 Metric Tonnes of trash stinks up Mumbai

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday collected 12 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage along Marine Drive. The civic body had collected 9 MT of trash from the famous promenade on Friday.

Along with this, 60 tonnes of trash was collected from Juhu beach, whereas at Versova and Dadar Chowpatty, 22 and 42 tonnes of garbage was collected respectively.

As the Mumbaikars are about to witness a high tide of 4.97 metres at 1.49 pm on Sunday, the sea is expected to wash ashore more trash. On Saturday, there was a high tide of 4.96 metres at 1.02 pm.

According to civic officials, the total garbage lifted from Marine Drive during high tide on Saturday was approximately 12 MT. It was 12 times the garbage collected from the promenade everyday.

The promenade along the sea is located in two wards — A and C. In A ward, 20 labourers collected 4.4 MT trash, whereas in C ward 35 labourers lifted 7.5 MT trash along the Marine Drive. The trash was collected in the duration of almost 3.5 hours.

The garbage overflowed onto the adjoining road of Marine Drive, causing stench and sullying the beauty of the scenic tourist spot. Plastic constituted majority of the trash.

Meanwhile, on Friday, a high tide of 4.85 metres at 12.13 pm washed ashore an astonishing 9 MT of trash along Marine Drive. The city generates over 7,000 metric tonnes of garbage daily.

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner (solid waste management) said, “The high tide has resulted in throwing up of trash in large quantity at Marine Drive. The promenade is cleaned twice every day. With Sunday expected to see highest tide of the monsoon, we will deploy more labourers for clean-up operations.”
