No end to Mumbai University results mess

Mumbai: The Mumbai University (MU) is all set to miss its third deadline for declaration of the results of final year examinations on Tuesday. The deadline was given by MU vice chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, who went on an indefinite leave on August 5. The results have been delayed for over three months. Out of the 477 examinations conducted by the varsity, 331 have been declared, and 146 are yet to be announced. The exams were conducted by the varsity in the month of April and May for the final year degree college students.

1,69,996 answer papers are yet to be assessed. An insider confirmed that it would take 15 more days in order to declare all the pending results.

Out of 1,699,96 pending answer sheets, 76,856 answer sheets are of the commerce department. Apart from regular commerce department, 10,828 papers of law department have not been assessed. Departments such as technology, management, and arts have completed 99.67 percent, 98.89 percent and 98.62 percent assessment of papers respectively. According to varsity officials, department of science has completed the assessment of papers and would the results be announced anytime soon.

Talking about the next deadline, the university said that now it doesn’t believe in the concept of a deadline, as it wants to focus on ‘quality’. MU’s acting V-C Dr Devanand Shinde said, “Our focus now is the quality of the assessment. Thus, we won’t have a deadline or timeline pattern. Maintaining the quality is the key, and the rest is primary.”

In order to speed up the process, Mr Shinde also met the makers of the On-Screen Marking system, MeritTrac on Sunday to discuss the glitches. The meeting was held to discuss a solution for all the technical problems.
