Car rams into auto in Vashi, killing driver

The auto rickshaw driver was pronounced dead before admission into a local hospital.

Mumbai: The driver of a four-wheeler identified as one Amol Kumbhar rammed into an auto rickshaw at Vashi’s sector no 2, killing the auto driver on the spot, following which, the car lost control and rammed into an ATM centre. The auto rickshaw driver was pronounced dead before admission into a local hospital. The police has arrested Kumbhar and booked him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to police sources, the incident occurred at 2 am on Thursday near Vashi’s sector 2 signal post, when the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga with registration number MH-43-BE-8153, being driven byKumbhar, a resident of Nerul, rammed into an auto rickshaw with registration number MH-43-AC-9529, being driven by Janardan Kamal Yadav (42), a resident of Jungaon in Vashi. Kumbhar tried to flee the spot after the car lost control and rammed into an ATM centre, and was successful at that. However, four hours later, he was caught from his residence in Nerul.    

The police tracked down Kumbhar with the help of his address mentioned at the RTO office, against his car’s registration number. The Vashi police arrested him and booked him under sections 279, 427 and 304A of the IPC that pertain to rash driving, damage caused by mischief, and causing death by negligence, respectively. The police also booked him under section 3 of the Prohibition of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, for ramming into an ATM centre and damaging the property.

Kumbhar was produced in court Thursday afternoon and remanded to police custody for four days.
