Mumbai: After changing the current copper cable indicator with an internet protocol (IP)-based indicator at Ambarnath, Badlapur, Vithalwadi, Shelu, Bhivpuri Road, Shahad, Ambivali, Titw-ala, Kasara and Dombivali stations, the Central Railway (CR) has decided to change indicators at Chhatra-pati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Kurla and Ghatkopar stations by December 2018.

An IP-based indicator is completely based on optic fibre cable which is free from external interference. It provides better clarity and display to the commuters. Additionally, its shelf life is 10 to 15 years.

CR officials said that the works on IP-based indicators had been undertaken in two phases. In phase one, 13 stations had been identified. Of these stations, works on changing the indicators at ten stations had been completed.

“Work is progressing at a fast pace at CSMT, Kurla and Ghatkopar stations, and is expected to be complete by December-2018,” said an official.

In the second phase, the CR will cover 22 suburban stations including Kalva, Mumbra, Diva, Thakurli, Koparkhai-rne, Thane, Matunga, Sion, Vidyavihar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Nahur, Bhandup and Mulund.

Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer of CR, said, “These new indicators have better and wider visibility.”
