Mumbai: The Thane GRP arrested the parents of a one-and-a-half-month-old female child that had been abandoned at Khadvali railway. The parents, who are daily-wage workers, told the police that they had abandoned the girl child because they could not earn enough money to take care of her. But one of their family members told the police that the couple had been expecting a baby boy, which is why they abandoned the girl child.

According to police officials, the accused parents have been identified as Subhadra Yadav (21) and her husband Gorakh Yadav (26). The duo resides in Khadvali and, two years ago, they fled from their respective homes to get married to each other despite their parents not giving consent. A police official said, “The couple was living in the Kalyan area and was working on daily wages. They went back to their families six months ago, but then robbed money from their relatives and fled the next day. After they had the girl child, they went to their parents’ place once again to find acceptance and forgiveness, but neither set of parents allowed them to stay in their house.”

DCP Rupali Ambure added, “The couple got fed up thinking about how they would survive with no money and with a girl child. Both of them spent the night at the railway station before they abandoned the child. We examined CCTV footage and acquired the contact number of one of Gorakh’s friends in Kalyan. The couple then took a train for Nandigao and went to Andhra Pradesh. We traced their location and sent our team to bring them back. Our team, along with the Andhra Pradesh police, arrested the two and brought them here. Meanwhile, we had handed over the baby to Janani Ashish Charitable Trust in Dombivali, and the authorities there have named the child Ruchita.”
