Mumbai: Mohammed Dilawar, founder of Nature Forever Society, highlighted how the lack of nesting areas for the birds has led to a decline in their population. “The rapid concretisation has led to more and more glass buildings and structures that are unfavourable to the birds. These buildings also increase the chances of the birds running into the tall glasses after seeing their reflection on them. The older buildings had been designed with the crannies, nooks and bricked roofs that provide the birds nesting space,” he said.

“Apart from the lack in nesting sites, the regular tree felling is also one of the major reason for the decline of sparrows in the city. The most important habitat for these birds are trees. It is not only important to have good green cover but also the presence of native plants like mehendi where they could feed on insects which is their main diet.
