Mumbai: Acting on a tip-off by a reliable source, Dahisar police on Saturday arrested two men for the theft of 516 answer sheets of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students. The two accused were passing by the principal’s cabin on Friday when they saw the room vacant and decided to slip off answer sheets inside only to later sell them to a scrap dealer. The police has recovered 330 answer sheets from the two accused, and is yet to recover the remaining 186 SSC answer sheets.

According to police sources attached to Dahisar police station, police has arrested two men and two minors for allegedly stealing answer sheets from the principal’s cabin.

The principal, Narendrakumar Pathak, had earlier lodged a complaint against the school’s peon who had gone missing since the answer paper theft.

However, it was revealed that the papers were stolen by two passers-by who happened to see the principal’s cabin open and took a chance to steal the papers, only to sell them off to a scrap dealer in exchange for money.

Kirankumar Chavan, deputy commissioner of police, zone 12, told The Asian Age, “The police has arrested two men and two minors for theft of SSC answer sheets, which were later dumped at a secluded spot, once they realised that these were of no use to them. We have sent the two minors to a remand home while the two men will be remanded to police custody till Wednesday.”

The papers stolen by the accused last Friday included 149 history papers and 181 Sanskrit papers. Oblivious to the fact, the two accused threw the examination answer sheets at a secluded spot. The police first found the papers lying at the spot, following which they tracked the accused and arrested them.
