Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai customs nabbed two Syrian nationals who were attempting to smuggle assorted medicines, worth rs 56 lakh, into the country.

The duo landed in Mumbai via Turkish Airlines and officials said that there was neither a prescription nor import bill of the medicines, suspected to be for cancer.

The arrested persons were identified as Khaldoun Jouda and Tarmanini Ali, both holding Syrian passports, who had come from Istanbul.

“The seizure was done on the reasonable belief that the medicines were attempted to be smuggled into the country without prescription, purchase bill and NOC from the office of additional drug controller,” said an AIU officer.

The officials said that the duo was intercepted following information of the attempted smuggling. The medicines were found in huge quantities inside their luggage.
