Mumbai: Shyamvar Rai, an accused-turned-approver in the 2012 Sheena Bora murder case, on Friday requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court to release him on bail so that he could make both ends’ meet for his poor family which has been in trouble due to his incarceration. Rai wept while standing in the witness box and told the judge that his family was unable to survive in his absence as he was the sole breadwinner. The court adjourned the hearing because the CBI has not yet filed its reply on Rai’s bail plea.

Rai was brought to the court on the directions of special judge J.C. Jagdale. He was called in court as he has not engaged any lawyer and has written a letter to the court asking to be released on bail as his wife and children are facing hardships ever since his arrest.

Rai became emotional after stepping into the witness box and kept weeping mostly. “Koi hamari madad karne wala nahi hai, hum bahut garib hain, ghar kiraye ka hai (There is nobody to help us, we are very poor and my family is living in a rented room). I will get a job and earn money,” he said.

The judge then reminded Rai that earlier, he had told the court that there would be greater risk to his life outside jail until the trial got over. To this, Rai said that there would be a threat to his life for his whole life now.
