Mumbai: In an alleged incident of honour killing, the Ghatkopar police arrested a father for allegedly killing his pregnant daughter. The arrest came a day after the brutal murder. Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had married against her family’s wishes that led to her murder.

The woman, Meenakshi Chaurasiya (20) married a local pan shop owner and was four months pregnant. Her father, Ramkumar (55), learnt about the marriage and was enraged citing his societal and monetary standing.

The accused hence hatched a plan to kill his pregnant daughter. On Saturday night, when the father-daughter duo was walking together, he slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times killing her. She was found in a pool of blood on a footpath in Narayan Nagar area on Sunday, following which the locals informed the police immediately.

“On questioning the in-laws and other relatives, it was revealed that Ramkumar was not in favour of their union. She had informed her in-laws that she was going to meet her father and would then proceed with him to her maternal home. This also later helped us corroborate that she was last seen with him,” said an officer of Ghatkopar police station.

After interrogating him, the officials established that he was involved in the murder and arrested him soon after. The police later found that he never permitted his daughter to marry a pan shop owner.

The duo tied the knot after being in a relationship for four long years. The husband of the deceased runs a pan shop in the vicinity and stays at Matunga. The police has arrested Ramkumar in the murder case.
