Mumbai: Police officers and servicemen were the star attractions at Independence Day celebrations in schools where they offered children and teachers rare insights into their lives and line of work. Schools conducted cultural and sports events as well as scouts, guides and tree plantation drives.

Reinki Ramana, a teacher, said that students the opportunity to meet real heroes.

The management of Panvel-based St. Joseph’s High School invited the assistant police inspector of Khandeshwar police station, Basit Ali Sayyed, as its chief guest. Likewise, central and suburban schools honoured officers from nearby police stations, who reminded students that contributing towards the nation and society is the responsibility of every citizen, including children.

Lt. Col. Pratik Sandhbhor, who unfurled the tricolour at Dadar Swatantryaveer Savarkar National Monument, said, “The colour of patriotism shouldn’t fade within a day but should remain forever.”

Meanwhile, schoolchildren decked saffron, white and green sang and danced to patriotic songs and participated in parades while free eye check-ups and awareness campaigns were organised for students of government and civic schools.
