Iconic ex-India captain Ajit Wadekar passes away

Mumbai: Former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar passed away late on Wednesday at Jaslok Hospital. According to sources, he was battling cancer. He was 77-years-old.

Mr Wadekar was credited with helming India's first Test win at a foreign location, leading the team to series wins in 1971 against England and West Indies. He was known as an aggressive left-hand batsman.

Mr Wadekar made his first-class debut in 1958-59, but had to wait for eight long years before playing for India in 1966-67. He played 37 Test matches for India.

Mr Wadekar was among the very few Indian cricketers who represented India in Test and one-day internationals and then went on to become the manager and coach as well. He also chaired the selection committee.

A statement from the hospital read, “Mr Wadekar was declared dead on arrival.” He had been critically unwell for sometime.”
