Mumbai: The government of Maharashtra on Monday filed an affidavit and informed the Bombay high court that as per September order a committee has been formed to solve the issue of parking and traffic congestion in the city. The affidavit also said that in the first meeting of the committee it was proposed that ‘A Mumbai Parking Authority’ would be established to ‘plan, regulate and manage’ all street parking and private parking in the city.

“A full-fledged parking authority is being set up by municipal corporation which will consist of municipal commissioner, joint commissioner of police, traffic and transport commissioner, Maharashtra state and other members. This authority will have comprehensive powers regarding all aspects of parking policy,” read the affidavit.

It also read that a committee has been constituted as per HC order and its very first meeting was held on September 25. In this meeting the problems involving parking and congestion on the street network of the city were discussed. The BMC proposed to establish ‘A Mumbai Parking Authority’ in consultation with the state government to plan, regulate, and manage all street parking and public parking places situated within the jurisdiction of Mumbai.

According to the affidavit, suggestions from citizens have been called in writing in this regard.

The court was informed that there is acute shortage of availability of space as compared to the huge demand for parking.
