PMC Bank scam: 2nd depositor dies of heart attack

Mumbai: An account holder of the crisis-ridden Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank suffered a heart attack on Tuesday.
The deceased, Fattomal Punjabi has an account with the PMC bank’s Mulund branch. He died of a heart attack at around 12.30 pm when he left from home to visit the bank to withdraw money. He was however rushed to nearby Gokul hospital for treatment but was declared “dead on arrival” by the doctors.
Several account holders on the bank on Tuesday evening held a candlelit march for the deceased at Andheri’s Tarapora Society.
Earlier, on Monday, a 51-year-old customer with deposits worth Rs 90 lakh died of a heart attack in Mumbai. The deceased, identified as Sanjay Gulati, used to work with Jet Airways.
Gulati participated in the protest along with his father Monday and returned home. The family was having a late lunch when Gulati collapsed and turned motionless. The family rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival and the cause of death was detected as cardiac arrest.
Chief minister Devend-ra Fadnavis on Tuesday said he would seek the Centre’s help to ease woes of depositors of scam-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank.
“I have assured PMC bank depositors that I will go to Delhi once model code of conduct (in force for the Assembly polls) is relaxed to seek the Centre’s intervention. I will urge the Union finance minister and other officials to use all possible ways to find a solution to their problem.”
Meanwhile, ruling Shiv Sena’s MP Rahul Shewale, Gajanan Kirtikar, Arvind Sawant and Anil Desai called on RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, and requested RBI to merge PMC with a state-run lender.
