Kurla West hit by contaminated water
Several residents down with diarrhoea, BMC says water line tainted with drainage pipeline.
Mumbai: The number of cases of diarrhoea and gastrointestinal problems is on the rise in Kurla (west). Doctors in the area say the reason for the increase could be due to contaminated water supply.
Residents of Kurla (west), particularly those residing in and around Kohinoor City, have been complaining about contaminated water being supplied by the civic authority. Societies in the area have put up notices, informing people about contaminated water. A notice put up in a society advises residents to take precautions and use only boiled water for drinking.
Dr. Sharat Kolke, a senior consultant at Kohinoor Hospital, Kurla (W), who specialises internal medicine and diabetes said, “There has been a drastic increase in cases of patients suffering from diarrhoea and gastrointestinal issues. We get almost 10 patients every day who complain of these issues; most are senior citizens. This, we believe, is due to contaminated water.”
Ambi Ajitkumar, ward officer of the L-ward said the water department along with the drainage and maintenance department is trying to locate the leakage in the water pipeline. “Various technologies for the same are being used. We have also asked a special team from Ghatkopar to help us locate the leakage.” He added that the main issue here is the illegal water connection done by people in the night, which damages the water line. We are focusing on fixing the leakage first and then taking up the illegal water connection issue.”
Mr NS Patel, a resident of Kohinoor City A, Kurla (W), said his 78-year-old mother developed acute diarrhoea on Saturday. “We rushed her to Kohinoor Hospital on Sunday morning because she suddenly fainted while having coffee. To our surprise, we saw other people from the locality, mainly senior citizens and children, who were afflicted with diarrhoea and gastrointestinal issues,” he said.
Societies in Kurla (W) have advised residents to use water for drinking only after boiling it.
