Mumbai: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended the discussion over soldiers during his election campaign, NCP chief Sharad Pawar Tuesday hit back at him saying that he was only politicising the death of the jawans.

Taking a dig at chief minister Devendra Fadnavis along with the PM, the NCP Chief asked whether they were now remembering about nationalism. “This is the BJP’s way of deflecting the mind of the common people from issues on the ground and it is worrisome. The state government has failed to deal with the drought situation,” said Mr Pawar. He also raised doubts about the relationship between the PM and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. Mr Pawar said that the voters would teach them a lesson.  “The chief minister and the PM are using this technique to gain power. They have nothing to say about development now. The PM, who assured 'good days' in the last elections, is now pursuing the issue of nationalism,” said Mr Pawar. “Rathod, a native of Buldhana, was martyred. During his funeral, the Prime Minister was only 40 km away. But they did not feel the need to meet his family and comfort them and now, are seeking votes in the name of the soldiers’ sacrifice,” he said.
