More showers in store for mumbai: IMD

Mumbai: After a few dry days, the rain gods have been smiling on the city since Thursday.

According to the Indian Meteorological Depar-tment (IMD), intermittent to heavy showers are expected till June 19. In the last 24 hours — from 8.30 am on Friday, rainfall of 37mm and 9.1mm was recorded at the Colaba and Santacruz observatories respectively.

Moreover, the IMD has forecasted possibility of increased intensity of rains in Mumbai from Sunday. “Mumbai is expected to receive heavy rain at isolated places on Sunday and Monday. It could be due to the circulation in the North Arabian sea area,” said an IMD official. “The cyclonic circulation at 7.6 km above mean sea level over east central Arabian sea of Karnataka coast, now lies over east central Arabian sea of south Maharashtra-Goa coasts,” read the IMD report.   

The IMD has issued an alert for Ratnagiri, Raigad and Sindhudurg districts for Monday forecasting rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places and an expected increase in rainfalls from Saturday.   

According to Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency, southern parts of Vidharbha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will also receive light rains.
