Now, Vihar lake overflows this season

Mumbai: Vihar lake is the third lake to overflow this month of the monsoon season. The lake reached the overflow mark early morning on Monday.

The BMC withdraws 110 million litres of water daily from the Vihar lake located on the Mithi river. The annual storage capacity of the dam is 27,698 million litres. Earlier on July 9 and July 15, the Tulsi and Modak Sagar dams overflowed, respectively.

“Although Vihar does not contribute much to the city water supply, it is still good news.

Now, only Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa reservoirs are left to overflow. With the kind of rainfall that Mumbai has been receiving lately, it may happen in a month’s time,” a senior official from BMC’s hydraulic engineering department said.

 Due to heavy rainfall in the neighbouring Thane district, the Modak Sagarlake in Shahapur taluka started overflowing on Sunday.
