New Goregaon flyover to be thrown open for public today
Shiv Sena, who has been facing flak for delaying the opening, has now decided to throw open the bridge to the public on Friday.
Mumbai: The three-lane Veer Savarkar flyover at Goregaon, which will be thrown open to the public on Friday, will be a boon for motorists in the suburbs. Reason being its two lanes will accommodate the maximum vehicular movement during peak traffic hours.
According to civic officials, there is heavy south-bound traffic in the morning whereas in the evening, there is heavy north-bound traffic. The two lanes of the Savarkar flyover will be used to accommodate this traffic.
The Savarkar flyover, which passes through the MTNL junction, will prove crucial for motorists to avoid traffic on S.V. Road. At crowded places such as MTNL junction and Inorbit Mall, motorists can skip traffic signals by taking the flyover, said civic officials.
The work on the flyover has been completed by the BMC and it is awaiting inauguration. It was constructed at a cost of Rs 27 crore. The construction was started in 2015.
Shiv Sena, who has been facing flak for delaying the opening, has now decided to throw open the bridge to the public on Friday. The inauguration was slated to take place at the hands of Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray, but it has now been postponed due to the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“It is not fair to delay use of the bridge and inconvenience the public. Hence, it has been decided to open the bridge to traffic on Friday. The inauguration can be done later,” said mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar.
The Sena has also decided to cancel the inauguration ceremony of the General Arunkumar Vaidya swimming pool at Chembur on Saturday. However, the pool, too, will be opened to the public, at the appointed time.
