4,658 cases of traffic norms violation over long weekend
The collections came in the backdrop of the amendments passed in Lok Sabha to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.
Mumbai: The traffic police department of Mumbai has registered 4,658 cases of rash driving, violation of helmet and seatbelt rules, over speeding and driving without licenses between April 14 and April 16. The police collected fines worth of Rs 11.58 lakh.
The collections came in the backdrop of the amendments passed in Lok Sabha to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. After the amendments are passed in Rajya Sabha, the act will lead to a 20-fold rise in the fine for rash driving.
According to the police sources attached to the Mumbai Traffic department, after the amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act are passed, the vehicle owners will have to pay fine of Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 500 for driving without a license and Rs 6,000 instead of Rs 1,000 for overspeeding and rash driving.
The police has witnessed a rise in the awareness of people regarding traffic rules after the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act was passed in the Lok Sabha.
In the month of March, 3.46 lakh traffic violations took place.
