Mumbai: A 25-metre high Indian tricolour will soon be seen fluttering at the Nagpada junction in Byculla.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to beautify the congested junction at the cost of Rs 4.35 crore.

According to civic officials, Nagpada junction is one of the oldest junctions in the city. The junction witnesses heavy traffic throughout the day, making it a nightmare for the commuters. The BMC plans to give the junction a facelift so that motorists and pedestrians can easily navigate through the area. Removal of illegal hawkers and unauthorised parking is also high on the civic body’s agenda.

Local Samajwadi Party corporator, Rais Shaikh, who has been pursuing the project, said, “There will be a small landscape garden at the junction so that it does not face any encroachment in future. It will also ensure smooth movement of traffic.”

The flag will be a major attraction of the beautification project. Mr Shaikh said, “The pole will hoist the flag throughout the year. The tricolour will be a matter of immense pride for Nagpada citizens,” he added.

“The BMC had appointed noted architect Hafiz Contractor to design the beautification project and prepare its estimates. Accordingly, the civic body received two bids for the project. Of them, M/s Ashish Construction emerged as the lowest bidder with the cost of Rs 4.35 crore,” said a senior civic official.

The project will be completed in nine months barring the monsoon.
