MumbaI: The Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) has issued instructions to all technical institutions affiliated to it to turn their campuses green by planting trees in order to encourage and promote tree plantation and deter tree cutting.

According to the officials, it will be the staff and students’ duty to maintain the trees based on the health of which they will be granted marks and appraisals.

As mentioned in the circular issued by DVET on Saturday to ITI's and polytechnics, there was a huge shortage of green cover and the institutes had to contribute towards increasing the same.

“The depleting green cover is a cause of concern as the climatic conditions are going from bad to worse. To slow down the damage and even improve the environmental conditions, the authoritative body which has hundreds of institutes under it in the state decided to address the problem more proactively,” said Yogesh Patil, deputy director, DVET, Mumbai.

Under this initiative, he added that as most institutes affiliated to DVET had ample space, they have been asked to encourage tree planting.
