Rains throw Mumbai's road, rail traffic out of gear

Railway officials said they have been constantly monitoring areas prone to water-logging like Mahim, Kurla and Sion.

Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed the city on Monday, resulting in water-logging at several places. Thanks to the showers, Central and Western Railway saw a delay of 15 to 20 minutes after motormen were instructed to restrict the speed of trains to 30 kmph in case of any issues on the tracks.

Railway officials said they have been constantly monitoring areas prone to water-logging like Mahim, Kurla and Sion.

At many places such as the area near National College in Bandra, road no. 24 in Sion and Milan subway there were bus diversions due to water-logging. The Andheri subway was shut for 30 minutes owing to flooding.

In western suburbs like Khar, Juhu, Andheri, Santa Cruz and Vile Parle, water-logging was seen adding to the woes of people. Santa Cruz resident Rajendra Thakur said, "Water-logging has created problems for local residents. The water accumulated was not receding fast.

The Gazdarbandh pumping station at Khar Danda developed technical problems once again after the pumps tripped at certain intervals. The rainfall recorded in the 12 hours from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm on Monday by the Santa Cruz observatory was 126.6mm while the Colaba observatory recorded 48.6mm of rainfall.
