Mumbai University avoids repeat of 2017 mess
Successfully declares popular courses' results in timely fashion.
MUMBAI: The University of Mumbai (MU) has successfully managed to complete the assessment of exam papers and declared the results of popular courses such as Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc) courses before the deadline, avoiding a fiasco similar to last year’s results delay. However, out of the 490 courses, the results of about 339 exams that were conducted in the month of May are yet to be declared. The pending results mostly pertain to the Science, Technology and Interdisciplinary Studies fields.
As per the Maharashtra Public University Act, all the results should be declared within 30 days, or 45 days at most, from the day that the examinations are held. “This time, all the courses with a high number of students were declared much earlier. The credit completely goes to the teachers because, despite the vacations, they assessed answer papers, which helped us to declare all the results on time,” said Dr Arjun Ghatule, director and controller of the Board of Examinations. According to Mr Ghatule, the BA results were declared in 37 days, BCom in 27 days, BSc in 31 days, BSc- IT in 35 days, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) in 42 days and Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) in 14 days.
As for the pending results, 1,86,388 out of 16,62,767 answer papers are yet to be evaluated. While 2,238,66 students of 151 courses have successfully got their results, 1,945,21 students of 339 courses are yet to receive them. A large number of results are pending for Science and Technology courses — 151 out of 219 — while 72 out of 95 results are pending for Commerce and Management courses.
In total, for the recently summer exam, there were 490 exams/programmes for which 4,183,87 candidates appeared out of which 50,862 were for the Humanities faculty, 2,07,950 for Commerce and Management, 1,492,84 for Science and Technology and 10,291 for Interdisciplinary Studies. Incidentally, students were sent text messages to notify them about their results for the first time.
Law students made to wait
The results of the law examinations of summer 2018 that were conducted in
June will be delayed by some more time as there are few assessors for the answer papers. According to University of Mumbai officials, the assessors, who are
part-time professional lawyers, find it difficult to juggle both tasks, which is affecting the assessment speed of the law faculty’s answer papers.
