3.5L litres of spurious milk seized, trashed

Mumbai: Food and civil supplies minister Girish Bapat has directed officials to take action against milk adulterators. Food department officials seized 3.5 lakh litres of milk at Mumbai’s entry points on Tuesday night.
Considering the festival season, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has undertaken a drive to check milk and milk products. It was found that thousands of litres of milk were adulterated. So, the FDA seized three lakh litres of adulterated milk and destroyed 20,000 litres of milk. Around 60-70 officials participated in this drive, which was held throughout Tuesday night, said an official.
FDA officials intercepted 227 vehicles and checked the milk stocks of more than 9 lakh litres at Mulund, Dahisar, Mankhurd, Airoli and Mulund (east). They seized three lakh litres of milk in which ammonium sulphate and sugar maltodextrine-like chemicals were added.
The FDA destroyed the milk, said Girish Bapat.
Now, officials are investigating the matter and raiding dairies in various districts from where this milk was sent. We will take strict action against the offenders, said Mr Bapat.
