BMC to resurface 30 bridges by May 31
Mehta directed officials to immediately remove construction material from the work site after resurfacing.
Mumbai: Mumbaikars seem set for a smooth ride this monsoon if things go according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plan. The corporation has decided to resurface 30 major bridges in the city, including Lalbaug flyover, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), Belassis flyover, Currey Road flyover, Hindmata flyover, Chinchpokli flyover and Veer Savarkar Bridge, before the monsoon sets in.
The BMC has decided to carry out resurfacing instead of going in for complete repairs. S.O. Kori, Chief Engineer, Bridges, said: “The resurfacing of 28 bridges will be done before May 15. The Lalbaug bridge and SCLR will be worked on and finished by May 31.”
The 2.38-km Lalbaug Bridge runs from Byculla zoo to Parel, while the 2-55 km SCLR is the double-decker flyover above Central Railway’s main line and harbour line tracks.
The BMC has undertaken road works at several places in the city. These include 583 new roads along with resurfacing of roads with intact ground levels and damaged surfaces.
Under priority I, 110 roads have been earmarked for resurfacing. In the second phase, priority II, 938 road works are proposed. All priority I roads will be completed before the rains; 469 of the 938 priority II roads will be done before the monsoon, civic officials said.
The road department has also been asked to complete works of 82 roads coming under defect liability period (DLP) before May 15.
In a review meeting on Tuesday, civic chief Ajoy Mehta directed civic officials to immediately remove construction material, debris and barricades from the work site once road resurfacing works are completed.
“It will be the responsibility of concerned ward officials and road department to ensure that contractors have carried out these works properly and roads are opened to the traffic,” a senior civic official said.
