Thane: Following a late night search, police succeeded in saving the life of a 26-year-old man after he allegedly tried to commit suicide.

The man (name not disclosed), a resident of Dudhad village in the district, allegedly cut the veins of his hands late in the night on May 18. He also sent a text message to Pramod Pawar, an acquaintance, saying "I am committing suicide. Nobody should be held responsible for my act."

"I got a shock of my life when I read that. I had met this man in the college exam hall some years ago and we had kept in touch and used to exchange messages," Pawar told PTI.

Pawar immediately called him but got no response. "I called up another person in that village and asked him to visit my friend, but he wasn't found at home," Pawar said.

Pawar alerted two officials at the Ganeshpuri police station, Vishal Waikar and Sachin Dhole, who rushed to the village with a team. The police launched a search operation, roping in some 50 youths from the village. Luckily, soon thereafter Pawar received a call from his friend, who was crying. He told Pawar that he was near a bungalow on the outskirts of the village. The search party rushed to the spot and found him.

He was admitted to a hospital and was stated to be out of danger. "We feel very happy that we could save his life," said senior inspector Shekhar Dombe of the Ganeshpuri police station.
