This round will be for all those students who have not secured a seat even after four merit rounds.

MUMBAI: The third and final merit for the first-year degree admissions was announced on Wednesday, with a marginal dip in the cut-off percentage compared to the second list.

This year, a good number of colleges displayed the third list — unlike last year when all the seats were filled after the first and second lists were announced.

Over 90 per cent of seats are occupied already and the rest are expected to be filled after the third list’s admission process hence the colleges will start the classes next week. “As per the admissions, we will decide on a fourth list. However, because most of them are full, we will start the classes for students by next week,” said Dr Tushar Desai, principal of D.G. Ruparel College, Matunga.

The cut-offs saw a marginal drop in the top colleges but due to lack of seats, not more than 100 to 150 students are being placed. In colleges such as St. Xavier’s at Fort and HR College at Churchgate not more than 30 to 40 students were allotted seats, as 90 per cent seats are full in light of the first and second merit list.

Dr Parag Ajagaonkar, principal of Narsee Monje College at Vile Parle, said, “Before the decision of the fourth list, we will wait for two more days to check how many students are securing admissions as many students have applied for more than two courses. Once that is finalised, we will proceed with lectures and if there are any late admissions, we will provide them with extra lectures.”

Technically there are only three merit lists, but the University of Mumbai (MU) has a provision wherein colleges can opt for a fourth list if they have vacant seats. The other colleges in the city mostly opt for fourth and fifth lists to fill their seats, and these are done at the college level. Students are supposed to keep checking the websites of the colleges to find out about the vacant seats and cut-off percentage.

Students who have been allotted seats in the third merit list have been requested to secure admissions by submitting the documents and paying the fees from Wednesday to Friday.
