Mumbai: Locals thrashed an intoxicated driver in Thane’s Kapurbawdi area after he rammed his trailer into three cars and two motorcycles on Sunday night.

The incident took place near Wonder Mall when the vehicles were waiting for the signal to turn green. Nobody was injured in the accident, the police said.

The driver, identified as Saroj Chand (29), a native of Uttar Pradesh, was thrashed and handed over to the police who conducted a medical examination and found that he had consumed alcohol.

At around 10.30 pm, Chand was driving his trailer in a rash manner on the Thane bound lane of Ghodbunder road and lost control near the signal.

“The trailer rammed into two cars and three motorcycles and came to a halt at the signal. The accused driver has been booked, and further details are being gathered. Luckily nobody sustained an injury in the incident,” said Sukhada Narkar, Thane City police spokeswomen.

The police is recording statements of all the victims and is checking if Chand has any past criminal record. The trailer (with registration number MH04-AC-478) has also been seized, and the police is in the process of ascertaining its ownership.

The police reached the spot and apprehended Chand who was beaten up by locals. His medical examination revealed that he had consumed alcohol. He was heading from Vasai to Thane.

A case has been registered against Chand under sections 279 (rash driving), and 427 (mischief causing damage) along with relevant sections of Motor Vehicle act for driving in the inebriated state.
