MU library to be open on bank holidays

Mumbai: After The Asian Age reported on September 8, about the problems University of Mumbai (MU) are students facing due to non-availability of the Rajabai Tower and MU Library building given the restricted timings, the varsity has now restructured the timings for the benefits of students. As per the new notice, the library will now be open till 9.45 pm and on all public holidays and weekends.

Students had complained about the library shutting early and being closed on holidays. “We as research/Ph.D students need books for reference. This library which has enormous number of books but is of no help for us since it shuts before 7:30 pm and on holidays including second and fourth Saturdays,” a student said.

Even after several requests made to the Vice-Chancellor and library officials, students’ complaints continued to fall in the deaf ears. However, after we reported the story, the library officials decided to extend the timings and schedule.

In the notice, issued by the Rajabai Tower Library on November 16, it said, “With effect from now, the library will remain open for extended hours up to 9.45 pm and also on all Sundays, public holidays and second and fourth Saturdays from 10 am to 5:45 pm till further instructions.”

Students are happy with the university’s move as most of the examinations and assignment process are on. “The fight is not over yet but still we are happy that the university has done something for the benefit of its students. The next step is to bring digitalisation in the library for the betterment but this move is worth cherishing for us,” Shomit Salunke, M.Phil student said.
