Mumbai: The Deonar police station, the first in Mumbai that started eight-hour duty for police officials, has initiated a training workshop for police constables to upgrade their skills in fields such as computers, biometrics and CCTV footage.

The focus of the initiative is to improve the policemen’s knowledge and expediting investigation into cases. The Deonar police started eight-hour duty for its officials considering the health hazards posed by untimely duty hours and severe work pressure on its personnel.

One of the constables, Ravi Patil, said, “It is really great that we are improving our qualities. As part of the programme, seniors and experts take workshops to teach us computers, fingerprints, the biometric system, extradition process and several other things. The workshop takes place once every 15 days. Earlier, we had to wait for the particular officer who is fingerprints experts or CCTV footage analyser but now, as we all are learning these expertises, anyone can work on it. The time consuming process will end soon.”

The eight-hour duty hours experiment in place at the Deonar station sees officers working in three shifts. The first phase has already started and the next two phases will be completed in the next month.
