International firms picked to oversee coastal road works

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed two well-known international firms as project management consultants (PMCs) to oversee the works of two packages of the south end of its ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road project at the cost of Rs 108 crore. 

Of the two packages, the Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace phase has been allotted to Louis Berger Consulting for Rs 50.52 crore, whereas the other phase from Baroda Palace to the south end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) has been allocated to a consortium of Egis India Consulting Engineers and Cullen Grummitt & Roe (UK) Ltd at the cost of Rs 57.61 crore.  

According to civic officials, the south end project is divided into three packages — Princess Street flyover to Priyadarshini Park, Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace and Baroda Palace to BWSL. The BMC has decided to appoint a separate PMC for each the three packages of the south phase. 

“However, the civic body received only one bid for the package of Princess Street flyover to Priyadarshini Park. As the contract cannot be allotted to a single bidder as per the civic policy, it has been decided to re-tender the bid for this package,” said a senior civic official. 

For the remaining two packages of Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace and Baroda Palace to BWSL, Louis Berger Consulting had emerged as the lowest bidder. As per the tender conditions, a bidder will not be given more than one package. Hence it was decided to allot the work of Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace to Louis Berger and the other work to the consortium, which emerged as the second lowest bidder in that package, he added
