Police nab two, recover valuables worth Rs 5.85 lakh

The accused revealed that movies gave them the idea of operating from refuge areas of buildings.

Mumbai: The Ghatkopar police arrested two movie buffs, who would land up in high rises and enter apartments by climbing pipelines and enter the flats via refuge areas. The officials said that the duo would run away with valuables. At least five similar cases have been registered against them.

The two accused were identified as Anand Sakpal, 20 and Ganesh Devkar (also in his twenties) and they have revealed that they were influenced by movies that gave them the idea of operating from a refuge area. Senior inspector Venkat Patil said that they would decide on a random flat and commit the offence. After several cases were reported in the neighbourhood with similar modus operandi, the police intensified their scrutiny.

“The team along with sub inspector Maitranand Khandare received a tip off on two suspects. We laid a trap and apprehended them. They revealed about the crimes they have committed. We have recovered valuables worth Rs 5.85 lakh,” said Akhilesh Kumar Singh, deputy commissioner of police (zone VII).

The officials have found that they are wanted by Ghatkopar, Kandivli, NM Joshi Marg, Matunga, Versova and Goregaon police. A case of house break-in has been registered against them and they have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.
