Monsoon rains to hit city by June 24, predicts IMD

Mumbai: Mumbaikars are witnessing rainy mornings for the past two to three days although monsoon is yet to arrive in the city. There has been moderate rainfall during the nights, resulting in cooler mornings and a dip in temperature up to 24 degree Celsius.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday tweeted, “The morning weather is typical monsoon type, although the monsoon is yet to arrive. Enjoy the pre-monsoon showers.” As per IMD, Colaba received 17.8 mm rainfall and Santacruz received 18.0 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The western suburbs have been receiving comparatively more rainfall than the eastern suburbs and city area. As per the disaster management unit, in the last 24 hours (8 am, June 18 to 8 am, June 19), the western suburbs have received 24.2 mm rainfall; the eastern suburbs 21.2 mm; and the city area 10.5 mm rainfall.
Till June 18, the city received total rainfall of 126.6 mm (Colaba) and 164.7 mm (Santacruz). However, the amount of pre-monsoon rainfall is lesser than last year. During the corresponding period last monsoon, the city received 220.0 mm (Colaba) and 198.3 mm (Santacruz) rainfall.
The IMD had earlier predicted that monsoon would arrive in the Konkan region including Mumbai by last Sunday however it is delayed due to the recent cyclone Vayu. The IMD has now predicted that monsoon will arrive in Mumbai by June 24 and cover the entire state by June 25.
