Mumbai: A 10-year-old identified as Pratibha Shindgare lost her life Tuesday after a paver block fell on her head from an under-construction building at Panchsheel Nagar in Chembur Monday morning.

Pratibha, whose father is a sanitation worker in the civic department of Navi Mumbai, was a student of BMC-run Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar School.

According to Pratibha’s relative, “Pratibha was staying with her paternal aunt since she lost her mother when she was merely 15 days’ old. Yesterday morning she went to fetch milk when a paver block fell on her causing her head to bleed.”

“The building where Pratibha was residing is under construction,” the relative said.

Pratibha was rushed to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar but  they recommended admitting her to KEM Hospital, which is well-equipped in comparison to other civic hospitals.

At KEM Hospital, she stopped responding to treatment. Subsequently, the doctors declared her dead due to severe brain injury. A post-mortem is underway.

Police spokesperson DCP Pranay Ashok said, “An FIR has been filed under section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons. Our investigation is underway and we have sent the paver block for analysis and further evaluation.”
