Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch busted a racket of phone thieves, all loaders, who stole handsets from air cargo while taking it to warehouse. The unit X officers have recovered 56 handsets worth around Rs 6.5 lakh from the trio.

The arrested accused were identified as Indrajit Magar (26), Satish Nimbalkar (30) and Chotelal Yadav (25), who had been stealing the high-end smartphones from the cargo while shifting it from the flights.

“The trio would operate in unison while shifting cargo to the cargo terminal. They would steal and hide at least two phones inside their clothes and would exit the premises unchecked,” said a crime branch officer.

Following several complaints of phones going missing, the Sahar Airport police station registered cases against unknown persons. During a parallel investigation being conducted by crime branch, they found the behaviour of the trio suspicious and questioned them further.

The officials found replies of the accused evasive. They subsequently spilled the beans. The police is now trying to trace the buyers of the stolen phones.
