Sewage pump to breathe fresh life in Powai lake

Mumbai: The heavily polluted Powai lake is likely to be clean as the Brihanmumbai municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up a sewage pumping station, which will prevent entry of sewage water into the lake. The dirty water will be diverted into a nearly sewage main.

According to civic officials, the dry weather flow - sewage water during non-monsoon season - from nearby areas like the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Peru Baug has been heavily polluting the Powai Lake for several years. “Areas like Perubaug, NITIE Campus do not have sewage lines. Hence dry weather flow from these areas is directly flowed into the Powai lake resulting into its pollution,” said an official.

The BMC had appointed a consultant to study the possibility of diverting the dry weather flow into the nearby sewage line. For the sewage water at NITIE, the consultant has proposed to set up a sewage pumping station at municipal security chowky in Powai. In addition to this, he has also proposed to divert the dry weather flow at Peru Baug into the proposed eight million-litre daily (mld) capacity sewage treatment plant, which will be built as a part of Mithi river works.

“The BMC has decided to set up four mld capacity sewage pumping station to divert dry weather flow of NITIE campus into the sewage line at Adi Shankaracharya Road,” the official said.
