Mumbai: Ashwini Geete, a 26-year-old constable attached to the Ghatkopar police station, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to death late Monday evening at her Kalyan residence.

The Manpada police has registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the case. The police said that primary investigation revealed that she was in love and a complication related to it may have triggered her extreme step. The police found no suicide note on the spot.

According to sources, the incident came to light at 11.30 pm on Monday, when Ms Geete was found hanging with a dupatta  from the ceiling fan of her residence in Manpada, Kalyan. A probe conducted by the police, where it inquired with the neighbours and people who knew Ms Geete, found that she was romantically involved with a man from Kalyan but owing to family pressures, she never made it official. The police suspects that this might have led to her decision to commit suicide.

Gajanan Kapdule, senior police inspector of Manpada police station said, “We have registered an ADR and sent her body to a civic-run hospital where the post-mortem will be done. The cause of death is asphyxiation, and we are trying to find out the reason behind her taking the step.”

Ms Geete is survived by her parents and sister. An officer attached to the Ghatkopar police station told this newspaper on the condition of anonymity, “Ms Geete was hardworking. She did seem low for the last two or three days, but we had never anticipated that she would commit suicide.”
