Milind Deora looks into water supply issue

Mumbai: The exit polls have predicted a clean sweep for the BJP in all six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai. However, that has not discouraged the Congress’ candidate in the Mumbai South constituency, Milind Deora, from continuing his work in politics. Mr Deora on Monday met municipal commissioner Praveen Pardeshi over the issues of water contamination, water supply and incomplete road projects in the city. He also discussed several pre-monsoon works like nullas desilting.

Mr Deora during his meet raised a demand that Mumbai needs a supply of 4,300 million litres of water supply on a daily basis to meet the city’s needs. At present, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) supplies 3,800 million litres of water to Mumbai daily. Mr Deora made this demand despite the water scarcity and the BMC applying 10-15 per cent water cut. But he claimed that BMC is applying 20 to 30 per cent water cut in every ward due to which water pressure is low and areas such as Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Sion Koliwada, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Bhandup and many chawls and slums of western suburbs are affected.

Mr Deora said, “The BMC chief has promised to dismantle Mumbai’s tanker mafias and ensure 24/7 distribution of water to Mumbaikars.” While speaking of the exit polls, Mr Deora said, “In my experience, the exit polls are usually inconsistent with the final results. I patiently await the actual results on May 23.”

A senior officer from hydraulic department, however, said no specific areas in Mumbai receive contaminated water. “On Mr Deora’s demands on water supply, we will analyse what can be done,” the officer said.
