Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR) benched its problematic rakes which have a low water clearance level, running only 60 per cent of its services on Wednesday, while Western Railway (WR) ran 90 per cent of its services due to the heavy rains, said sources.

In all, CR saw around 1,000 to 1,200 services run from their usual 1,660, while WR ran around 1,294 services from their usual 1,950..

The first signs of trouble were seen on WR when the railway line between Virar and Dahau was hit due to waterlogging from 5am to 6.30am.

The line saw trouble again at Nallasopara with water levels reaching a few inches below the edge of the platform, causing a delay of 30-40 minutes. In fact, a video of a long distance train powering through the water went viral on social media.

CR, on the other hand, saw slight water logging at Kurla and Sion with services delayed by 15 to 20 minutes during the day. But it evened during the evening peak hours.

Learning from the deluge of August 29, CR removed 30 to 32 rakes from its services. Only rakes that were able to operate through six-inch water were pressed into service.

“We instead ran the Seimens rake on the mainline and on the harbour line,” said an official.

The road traffic in Mumbai saw few disruptions as most of the city opted to work from home, apart from parts of Mulund, Vile Parle and the Milan subway most of the cities arterial roads were almost empty.
