BMC razes illegal structures of Andheri's popular pubs

About 25 BMC officials and labourers participated in the demolition drive, whereas the police have deployed a team of 25 personnel at the spot.

Mumbai: In a major demolition drive undertaken in the K-West ward, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) razed illegal constructions of more than 15,000 sq ft area erected in several popular pubs and restaurants in Andheri West. These eateries were found operating business at these spaces by violating the municipal norms, said civic officials.

The names of these restaurants include Indep-endent Breweries, Space Bar, Little Door, Kaliedo, Brew Bot, Autumn, Glocal Junction, B Desi and Beyond Bar. According to civic officials, the civic body has initiated a demolition drive against illegal constructions in Andheri (west). As a part of this drive, the BMC has demolished illegal constructions in nine restaurants so far.

The action is in final stages in two restaurants – Rike Terrace Bar and Barbeque Nation, whereas the Sheesha hotel brought down illegal constructions in their premises on their own, said civic officials.

“We had received many complaints about illegal alternations and extensions carried out in these hotels. During the drive, we found that these illegal constructions have been erected mostly in the compulsory open space of these restaurants. The action will further continue against unauthorised structures,” said Prashant Gaikwad, assistant municipal commissioner,” K-West ward.

“The restaurants had put up illegal extensions. We asked them to restore the compulsory open space, failing to which the extensions would be demolished without any further intimation. These open spa-ces are necessary for the movement of pedestrians, and also for the safety issue,” he added.
